The Flying Duck

Hello and welcome back to Veggie Affair, a blog where I enlighten you about some of my favourite places to eat as a vegetarian in Glasgow. This week I am discussing The Flying Duck, an underground bar and diner which is 100% vegan. The Flying Duck is home to some of the very best vegan junk food. Who doesn’t love some greasy junk food? From big mac burgers, loaded fries, kababs to hot dogs, the menu at The Flying Duck offers pretty much everything you could possibly dream of (I have attached the menu at the bottom)

The Flying Duck is located on Renfield street, just a few minutes off Sauchiehall street, making it a very central and accessible location. The bar itself has an extremely cool vibe and offers live music, private functions, pub quizzes and much more. The Flying Duck are currently closed due to COVID-19 and had plans to reopen tomorrow, however due to new local restrictions I suspect this will be pushed back (I am absolutely gutted as I was planning on filling up my belly with some delicious veggie junk very soon).

I first visited the Flying duck with a few of my friends: half of us veggie/vegan and the other half not, we all ate the same delicious vegan dishes which highlights just how incredible The Flying Ducks vegan food is! For those who knew me pre-veggie, my favourite thing to order was a burger while eating out, so I’ve been on the hunt for a juicy burger that is so good I can inhale it just as quickly as I used to when it was meat (there have been some shocking veggie burgers that’s for sure).

At the Flying Duck, I ordered the Big Mac burger which is a double patty club with onions, burger sauce, pickles, lettuce, and it comes with a side of fries and slaw. This was accompanied with a pint (of course) and a side of the mac cheese. The burger was amazing and definitely made the list of one of the best vegan burgers I’ve had. I wanted another one straight away! I tend to be sceptical about vegan cheese as I absolutely love dairy and tend to find the taste of vegan cheese slightly unappetising, but this was exceptional, so I digress.

Overall, The Flying Duck is a fantastic destination for some vegan junk food- I know I will be making another trip as soon as they re-open to taste some of the other fantastic options on their menu (I am dreaming of the Bacon double Cheeseburger and loaded fries!).

  1. Reading this has made me hungry. Great read. I love trying something a little different and not a chain. This a must on my list. Thank you Nicki Elliot for highlighting it .

    1. Thank you😊 I thought it would be good to talk about places that were of two things: 1. not a chain and 2. not super well-known, as these are the places people normally know least about

BAKED pizza al taglio

Welcome back, to Veggie Affair a blog based on my favourite places to eat as a vegetarian in Glasgow. This will be my 5th and final blog post, but I hope you are as excited as me for this one! I saved the best for last. This place is my ultimate heaven: Roman style Italian pizza. For anyone who knows me this is probably my most talked about and most visited place!   BAKED pizza al taglio is located on Duke street, just a 10-minute walk  from George Square. It is directly across from the Tenants brewery so you most definitely cannot miss it. The restaurant itself is a small and very casual environment but it is always super busy with people coming in and out for what in my opinion is the best pizza in Glasgow (easily). The best thing about BAKED is that their pizza is served by the slice, known in Italy as ‘pizza al taglio’ or ‘pizza by the cut’. This means you can try multiple different pizza slices all in one meal, so there’s no need to commit to your whole pizza tasting the same! I

Rose and Grants

Hello and welcome back to Veggie Affair, a blog where I tell you some of my absolute go to places for vegetarian food in Glasgow. This week’s blog is on Rose and Grants a café and delicatessen, who pride themselves in using fresh and local produce. Rose and Grants specialises in great brunch, lunch and cakes, their menu is 60% veggie and vegan, with all the cakes in their cabinet being 100% vegan. The menu is very diverse and has veggie and vegan options which are not readily available anywhere else: like vegan macaroni pies, vegan scotch pies and vegan square sausage!!  I have visited Rose and Grants multiple times and I am never disappointed. My most recent visit was only last week where I ordered the vegan French toast, maple syrup and seitan bacon. It was so good!! They have absolutely perfected this French toast recipe: it is made with a chia seed mix and tastes absolutely delicious; you wouldn’t even know it was vegan.  They offer some great other options like full breakfasts, ba
